Fish oil supplements may help combat heart disease, but won’t affect weight loss in people who are already dieting and exercising, according to new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
While previous studies in animals have shown that in addition to metabolic and cardiovascular benefits, omega-3 fatty acids may also have added weight loss benefits, new research out of The Cooper Institute in Dallas suggests otherwise.
Dr. Laura DeFina and colleagues conducted randomized clinical trails on 128 overweight and obese individuals. Some were given omega-3 supplements while others were given a placebo over a six-month period, Reuters reports. Both groups received dietary and exercise counseling and participated in weekly aerobics and strength-training workouts.
Participants — 81 of which completed the 24-week trial — in both groups lost about 5 percent of their body weight.

People eating a traditional Mediterranean Diet may maintain better brain health later in life; suggests a new study.
The Mediterranean Diet is native to countries in Southern Europe, most notably Greece and Italy, is rich in fruits, vegetables, wine, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish, and olive oil, but low in meat and dairy. The Mediterranean Diet is often linked to reduced health risks, such as cancer and heart disease.
And now, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a new study found Americans living in the Midwest consuming a traditional Mediterranean Diet may have brains that age slower, compared to people with other dietary habits.
For the research, scientists looked at the diet and cognitive function of 4,000 Midwesterners, ages 65 and older, and rated their adherence to a traditional Greek diet.
Study participants cognitive decline was assessed every three years; testing individuals’ word memory and basic math skills. Results showed people most closely following the traditional Mediterranean Diet showed slower mental decline over time, even after accounting for education level.
The researchers believe typical Mediterranean foods, such as fruits and vegetables – which are loaded with antioxidants – may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain; a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists have decoded the DNA of fine cocoa, publishing their results in Nature. Fine cocoa is used in the production of luxury chocolates and is only used for a fraction of chocolate production. The Guardian explains:
Fine cocoa accounts for only 5% of world cocoa production because the trees are susceptible to disease and produce lower yields than other strains of cocoa tree.
