For the past month, I’ve been battling some not-so-fun gastrointestinal issues. I’ll spare you the gory details, but basically, I’ve spent a lot of time freaked out, uncomfortable and in the bathroom. Let me tell ya, it’s been a rockin’ good time. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I really don’t know exactly what’s wrong with me, but I will tell you what I know.

After a bunch of tests last week, I was diagnosis with colitis, which is swelling (inflammation) of the large intestine. The symptoms are belly pain, cramps, fatigue, diarrhea, bleeding and other yuckiness. Sounds just peachy, doesn’t it? I have no clue how it started or whether it is something that I have to live with for the rest of my life. All I know is that I feel terrible.

Obviously, I’m not a happy camper right now. I’ve always been healthy, so dealing with this illness is really throwing me for a loop. I am upset and frustrated, and I just want to be well again!

My doctor prescribed a combination of drugs and suggested limiting the high-fiber foods in my diet to give my intestines a rest and to minimize symptoms. At first, I didn’t listen to his advice about making changes to my diet. I ate my usual amount of fruits, veggies, and whole grains (I thought the nutrients were most important to getting well), but all of the fiber was upsetting my digestion, which made me feel even worse.

I started to eat more bland, intestine-friendly foods, including chicken soup, rice, ramen noodles, and bagels, which have helped me feel much more like my usual self. (I take a daily multivitamin to fill in the nutritional gaps.) Additionally, nixing the foods from my diet that worsen my symptoms (coffee, alcohol, refined sugars, beans, legumes, and spicy foods) has also really helped. (You can read more about foods to avoid if you have ulcerative colitis.)

It’s only been a few weeks, so I’m still figuring out what colitis is all about and how I can better deal with it. There isn’t a cure for it, but I know with the right changes to my diet and lifestyle, I will be back to my old self again soon.

Calcium Supplements May Cause Heart Problems

Posted on June 30th, 2011 by admin  |  Comments Off

(HealthCastle.com) For years we have been advised to take calcium supplements to reduce the risk of osteoporosis if we do not consume enough calcium-rich foods. However, based on a new meta-analysis, this recommendation has been called into question by some researchers.

Calcium Supplementation and Heart Problems – The New Findings

In April 2011, a meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal sparked a round of debate among scientists. A group of researchers from the University of Auckland in New Zealand re-analyzed existing data that examined the effect of calcium and Vitamin D supplementation on heart problems in 29,000 postmenopausal women. They concluded that calcium supplements (with or without Vitamin D) increased the risk of heart attack by 25 percent, and stroke by 15 percent. These findings suggest that the risk of heart problems outweighs the potential benefits of taking calcium supplements. The study’s senior researcher, Professor Ian Reid, indicated that for every thousand people taking calcium supplements for five years, six cases of heart attack would occur while only three cases of fractures could be prevented.

The Debate

Although Professor Reid insisted that a significant body of evidence says there is a concern, other scientists weighed in with different opinions. Notably, representatives from the supplements industry were keen to rebut. John Hathcock, senior vice president of scientific and international affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, criticized the study’s methodology as flawed and claimed that he would not place a lot of weight on this study. In addition, Dr. Cara Welch from the Natural Products Association stated that there are many more studies that illustrate the benefits of taking calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Harry Rice, who represents the United Natural Products Alliance also thinks the study provides far too little evidence to warrant a change in public health policy.

The Bottom Line

It appears that there won’t be a clear-cut answer to this question in the short-term, and that the debate will likely continue. Before we get a more definitive answer on this issue, it is prudent to continue with your calcium supplements if you have been instructed by your physician to take them. More importantly, for the rest of us, sticking with good old calcium-rich foods is the best and safest way to meet our calcium needs.

The Foods Keeping You From Losing Weight

Potato chips and French fries — and generally any potato products — contribute to the biggest weight gain over time, according to a new Harvard study, which researchers say is the first to look at long-term weight gain pegged to specific foods.

The study, conducted over 20 years and published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that among more than 100,000 men and women whose weight was evaluated at four-year intervals, the average weight gain over each period was 3.35 pounds. This corresponded with an average weight gain just shy of 17 pounds over 20 years.

The researchers also tracked how much weight specific foods led people to gain over each four-year period. Potato chips were the worst culprit, associated with a weight gain of 1.69 pounds, followed by potatoes in general at 1.28 pounds. (French fries were worse than boiled or mashed potatoes.) This, explained Dr. Dariush Mozzafarian, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and the study’s lead author, could be because starches and refined carbohydrates produce bursts in blood glucose and insulin, increasing hunger and thus upping the total amount of food people eat at their next meal.

There were plenty of non-potato culprits, too: Sugary beverages accounted for a one pound weight gain, while alcohol was linked with an average gain of 0.41 pounds over four years. Unprocessed meats accounted for a 0.95-pound uptick in weight, while processed meats were right behind at 0.93 pounds.

Bryant Is Graduating High School — 100 Pounds Lighter

Bryant Eslava

Name: Bryant Eslava

Age: 18

Height: 5′9″

Start Weight: 235 pounds

Current Weight: 135 pounds

How You Lost: During my freshman year of high school I weighed 235 pounds. Now I’m officially a Class of 2011 high school graduate. And I’m 135 lbs. The reason I’m sharing my story is because I spent an entire summer at the gym every day, trying my hardest to lose weight.

You might ask, “Bryant, was it hard going to the gym everyday? Wasn’t it painful?” Well, I was already going through pain by being called all sorts of names that related to being overweight.

The breaking point happened during Summer 2008 when I was on the internet working on my computer skills and making my various profiles look cool. My apartment complex had a gym literally in front of my apartment door. So one day I decided to get off my butt and go on the treadmill.

It was the worst pain ever — keep in mind, I never took time to exercise before this and I always ate so much junk food.

Did I feel like giving up the first two days of exercising? Yes. What kept me going everyday? It simply was time for a change. I kept thinking to myself “I know I can. I know I will.” I spent my entire summer not focused on hanging out with friends or being social on the internet. The gym became my best friend.

Over time, I started to feel better. I could breathe better. Clothes fit me better.

When sophomore year started in 2009, people were shocked. They couldn’t believe how different I looked. That gave me the motivation to keep going. I began to eat healthy, because it only made exercising easier.

I’ve been vegan for a long time now. Is it for the trend? Absolutely not! It’s because my body feels better when I eat this way.

I just want to let you all know that anything is possible if you put your time into it. Don’t depend on others to hold your hand through life. Accomplish your goals on your own terms.

Follow your dreams — and don’t let anyone bring you down.
